Geothermal heating and cooling

Here at Conditioned Environment, our years of experience in the air conditioning industry have allowed us to keep up-to-date with a wide range of technological advancements in the heating and cooling systems’ fields.

This article takes a look at the growing interest in non-fossil fuel reliant technology for heating systems, focusing on the development of geothermal heating and cooling units.

What is geothermal heating and cooling?

Geothermal heating and cooling is based around the fact that the earth’s crust remains warmer than the outside air in winter, and cooler in the summer. Using pipes, the technology transports heat in order to heat and cool a home or a building.

How does geothermal technology work?

Geothermal systems are made from three main components: a heat-pump unit, a heat-change system, and an air-delivery system. The heat-change system is made from polythene pipes which can be buried under the ground both horizontally and vertically, dependent on the site it is being installed in.

Relying on the consistent temperature underground, thanks to the insulation the earth’s crust provides, the system relies on the series of pipes – know as an ‘earth loop’ – and the pump to transfer heat in order to heat or cool the building. As no heat is actually created using this system, simply transported, geothermal systems are capable of providing ‘free’ energy.

What are the benefits of geothermal heating and cooling?

  • Environmentally friendly – one of the biggest advantages to using geothermal heating and cooling systems is that they do not rely on fossil fuels in order to generate heat; rather, heat is simply transported to and from the earth. The environmental benefits to this type of technology could make it increasingly popular in the future.
  • These systems require little maintenance once installed, with the loops able to last for generations once installed.
  • Geothermal systems also emit no greenhouse gases, making them extremely popular with eco-friendly businesses and homes.

Whilst geothermal heating systems are increasingly popular in Europe, the technology is still rarely used here in the UK. That’s why here at Conditioned Environment we’re committed to providing the highest quality air conditioning services instead, ensuring that the installation and maintenance of your heating system is expertly provided.
